Safe Haven Baby Boxes: A Lifesaving Solution for Parents in Crisis

Safe Haven Baby Boxes is revolutionizing crisis response for parents by providing a secure, anonymous, and compassionate solution to safely surrender newborns. As of January 2025, over 300 boxes have been installed across 20 states, each equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure the safety and immediate care of surrendered infants.
How It Works: A Simple, Life-Saving Process

Locate a Box: Installed at fire stations and hospitals, the boxes are accessible 24/7.

Place the Baby Safely: Parents open the exterior door and place the infant inside the temperature-controlled, ventilated, and padded bassinet, designed to ensure the baby’s safety and comfort.

Secure the Door: Once the baby is placed inside, the door locks automatically from the outside, protecting the infant from unauthorized access.

Immediate Notification: An alarm system within the baby box alerts first responders, who arrive within minutes to retrieve the baby.

Medical Care and Placement: The infant receives a ‘patient care report’ and an immediate medical evaluation to address any health needs. The baby is then brought to the hospital and placed into the care of Children’s Services for adoption.
A Nationwide Impact
“We know [baby boxes] work because we’ve seen it,” said Tennessee Republican state Rep. Ed Butler, the sponsor of a baby box bill in his state. “My objective is to save a baby’s life, end of discussion.” In 2024, Tennessee lawmakers introduced a bill requiring a “newborn safety device,” such as a baby box, to be installed at a safe haven location in each of the state’s 95 counties.
Life saving legislation like this has been implemented in a number of other states. In December 2024, Georgia introduced House Bill 1030, proposing the authorization of anonymous drop boxes for surrendered babies. And as of January 2025, South Dakota’s House Bill 1044 – which allows parents to surrender their newborns in temperature-controlled, locked baby boxes – passed the House unanimously and is under consideration in the Senate.
